Viaggio in Sicilia
Prima visita Panormi
( Prima Visita di Palermo)

Due Aprile 1787,
tale data
somma importanza
per me riveste.

È difficile scriver dei versi
su questo vascello cullato dal mare,
all’orizzonte un’isola unica a vedersi
che finalmente potrò narrare.

È bello perdersi
in sì dolce fluttuare
e su sì piacevole morbidezza
che mi invita a naufragare.

I nitidi e netti contorni
rendono quest’aere irreale,
il cielo, il mare e la terra
in una perfetta simbiosi naturale.

L’ estasi prende il sopravvento
e Kniep principia a disegnare.
Giunge veloce il mio intervento,
vorrei aiutarlo a decantare,

ciò che Dio ha dipinto
col suo pennello perfetto,
non mi sento per nulla avvinto
e nell’umano non trovo difetto.

Ultimato l’attracco
e calati gli ormeggi
ci prepariamo allo sbarco
senza appannaggi.

A guisa di gendarmi
due agenti doganali
effettuarono controlli
per niente banali.

Così fummo autorizzati
a muoverci senza limitazioni,
sicché iniziammo il Tour
senza esitazioni.

Ma saremmo stati
anche apprezzati?
Dalle nostre paure
fummo interrogati.

A saperlo avevo un po’ d’impazienza,
ma giunse subito la prima accoglienza.
Visitai un giardino accanto al porto
ed ivi trovai il mio massimo trasporto.

Limoni, oleandri e gelsi
ma molto altro ancora
tanti alberi tra loro diversi
mi allietavano i sensi alla buon’ora

e sopraffatto
da una “dolcissima sensazione”,
volli restar da solo
in questo paradiso dell’immaginazione.

Mi trovavo nel posto
più bello al mondo,
il mio spirito diventava
felice e giocondo

nel contemplare compiaciuto
in ellenistico silenzio

Entrammo a Palermo
il giorno di Santa Rosalia
“un carro colossale”
la Sua effige conduceva lungo una via.

Eravamo alla ricerca di una locanda
e poco distante la trovammo,
il vecchio albergatore ci raccomanda
luoghi e posti che poi visitammo.

Fummo accompagnati
nelle nostre stanze

serpeggia lungo l’urbe fasto e discreto.

Le piazze d’Aragona
e di quella Pretoria
esempi e simboli indelebili
della civica memoria,

della sua storia
e del suo passato,
e di come ogni conquistatore
da Panormo alla fine venne conquistato.

Nella cattedrale di arte
araba e normanna,
mi siedo in disparte
perché la mia mente affanna,

a comprendere
la perfetta simbiosi
che portava
a sì indescrivibile osmosi.

Come rapito
dal volo della fenice,
studio attentamente
Porta Felice,

voluta e pensata
dallo spagnolo Vicerè
ponderata e progettata
per aprire tutta la città acciocché

al mediterraneo mare
fosse totalmente votata
così da un’enorme muraglia
venne liberata.

Decisi di risalire
Monte Pellegrino,
a pieno dovevo capire
che era il prodotto di un intervento Divino,

da cui si domina
il golfo e la Città
che il mio pittore
ben presto rappresenterà.

Innumerevoli esempi
di arte e architettura,
come preziosissimi stampi
avvolti da sì superba natura,

avevano allietato
oltremodo

la mia permanenza
e incontestabilmente credo

di aver trovato il senso
della mia stessa esistenza
e di aver scritto un’elegia
per omaggiar di Panormo la geografia

ma anche la storia
iniziata con i Fenici,
come un Cesare
VENI, VIDI, VICI,

i quartieri arabi,
stupende cornici
ed d’improvviso
un volo di pernici.

I monumenti
e le mille architetture,
i giardini civici
e le infinite venature.

Le chiese, i santuari
e I pregevoli monumenti
mi donarono piacevolmente
gradevolissimi appagamenti.

Diciotto giorni inenarrabili
son trascorsi,
da quando questo paradiso
venne toccato dai miei passi.

                     Trip to Sicily
             First visit to Panormi
            (First visit to Palermo)

Two April 1787,
that date
of utmost importance
for me it is.

It is difficult to write verses
on this vessel cradled by the sea,
on the horizon a unique island to behold
that I can finally tell.

It’s nice to get lost
in so sweet fluctuate
and on such a pleasant softness
which invites me to shipwreck.

The sharp and clear contours
make this area unreal,
the sky, the sea and the earth
in a perfect natural symbiosis.

Ecstasy takes over
and Kniep starts drawing.
My speech comes quickly,
I’d like to help him settle,

what God painted
with his perfect brush,
I don’t feel at all entangled
and in the human I find no fault.

Mooring completed
and lower your moorings
we prepare for landing
without fogging.

Like gendarmes
two customs agents
carried out checks
not at all trivial.

So we were authorized
to move without limitations,
so we started the tour
but would we also have been appreciated?

I knew I was a little impatient,
but the first reception came immediately.
I visited a garden next to the port,
where I found my maximum transportation.

Lemons, oleanders and mulberries
but much more
many different trees
my senses cheered me at good time

and overwhelmed
from a “sweet feeling”,
I wanted to be alone
in this paradise of imagination.

I was in the place
most beautiful in the world,
my spirit became
happy and joyful

in contemplating smugly
in Hellenistic silence
the miracles of

of botany
asking chemistry for an armistice.

Captured by this beautiful sky
the moon was reflected in the sea
from behind a promontory going up,
call almost to a miracol to show.

Panormo is a port city
but unlike the others
in it there is a different moral law
completely different and looking beyond,

from those so far known
which in comparison appear so sparse,
thus understood with great humility
why this island has always been the cradle of civilization.

We entered Palermo
the day of Santa Rosalia
“a colossal cart”
His effigy led the way.

We were looking for an inn
and not far away we found it,
the old hotelier recommends us
places and places that we then visited.

We were accompanied
in our rooms
where we were bewitched
from fine furniture and fragrant fragrances.

So embarrassed
in having agreed on such a paltry price,
in giving him an integration I urge,
but he refused it and I still appreciate it.

So it started
our adventure
in a busy city
of history and culture.

We visited the Cassaro area
we saw the Oreto river,
that in no way ephemeral
meanders along the pomp and discreet city.

The squares of Aragon
and that Pretoria
indelible examples and symbols
of civic memory,

of its history
and its past,
and how every conqueror
Panormo was eventually conquered.

In the cathedral of art
Arab and Norman,
I sit on the sidelines
because my mind is panting

to understand
the perfect symbiosis
that he wore
to you indescribable osmosis.

How kidnapped
from the flight of the phoenix,
I study carefully
Porta Felice,

wanted and thought
from the Spanish Viceroy
thoughtful and designed
to open the whole city to the sea.

I decided to go back
Monte Pellegrino,
I had to fully understand
which was the product of a Divine intervention,

from which it dominates
the gulf and the city
than my painter
will soon represent.

Countless examples
of art and architecture,
like very precious molds
surrounded by such a superb nature

they had cheered
exceedingly
my stay
and unquestionably I believe

to have found the meaning
of my very existence
and to have written an elegy
to pay homage to Panormo geography

but also history
started with the Phoenicians,
like Caesar
VENI VIDI VICI,

the Arab neighborhoods,
beautiful frames
and suddenly
a flight of partridges.

The monuments
and the thousand architectures,
the civic gardens
and the infinite veins.

The churches, the sanctuaries
and infinite monuments
they gave me pleasantly
pleasant pleasures.

Eighteen unspeakable days
have passed
since this paradise
he was touched by my steps.

But now I’m going
with such a sorry soul
to create a single trip
and one day I will tell the world about it.

Here it comes to me
some description
I taste it and it belongs to me
the precious elaboration,

Performed not by the Greeks
and not even by the Phoenicians,
I take his place in this regard,
his name is Muhammad al-Idrisi.

“[About Palermo] Beautiful and immense city, maximum and splendid stay, adorned with many elegance that travelers set off to admire the beauty of nature and art.”

Sicily is the shining gem of our century for its strengths and beauties. The splendor of its nature and the complex of its architecture make it a truly unique country, a paradise surrounded by the waters of the sea, a wonderful country in which travelers come from the most distant countries. “
Muhammad al-Idrisi, from the Book of Roger, 12th century.
